? How Much Weight Does The Soul Have

July 26, 2022Facts, Research

Source : stocklib

A great concept, the foundation of many religions, and a very consoling notion in the face of loss is that of an eternal soul.

Perhaps this is the reason some people have become dissatisfied with leaving questions of the soul to faith and instead turned to science in an effort to establish the existence of the soul. You’ve probably heard the findings of one of these pretty peculiar investigations if you’ve ever heard that the soul weighs 21 grammes or if you’ve seen the 2003 movie “21 Grams,” which makes reference to this idea.

What weight does the soul actually have? The bad news is that nobody can definitively answer that. Scientists are unable to measure or establish the existence of the soul. But it’s worth hanging around for the odd story of one doctor’s attempt to do just that.

Beginning in the Boston neighbourhood of Dorchester at the turn of the 20th century. Duncan MacDougall, a renowned doctor, had an idea that bugged him: if people had souls, those souls had to occupy space. Additionally, since souls occupy space, they would weight something, right?
The Soul’s Weight

MacDougall reasoned that there was only one way to learn the answer. It seems more logical to me to think that the substance assumed in our hypothesis must be some form of gravitative matter, and therefore capable of being detected at death by weighing a human being in the act of death, he wrote in the scientific paper he also could eventually publish (opens in new tab) about this attempt in 1907.

MacDougall collaborated with Dorchester’s Consumptives’ Home, a non-profit medical center for people with last stage tuberculosis, which was then an incurable disease. A big scale that MacDougall constructed can accommodate a cot and a Tuberculosis sufferer who is near death. For this experiment, MacDougall chose tuberculosis as a suitable disease because patients passed away from it in “great exhaustion” and without any movement that would disturb his scale.

Case 4, involving a woman who was dying of diabetes, was rejected by MacDougall because the scale had not been properly calibrated, in part because of “a decent deal of interference by people who object to our work.” This decision raises some questions, which MacDougall did not show up particularly eager to explain in his write-up. Case 5 lost 0.375 ounce (10.6 grammes), however the scale afterwards developed problems, so those numbers are also in doubt. Because the patient passed away while MacDougall was still adjusting his scale, Case 6 was dismissed.

The studies were then carried out again on 15 dogs, and MacDougall discovered no weight loss, concluding, in his opinion, that not all dogs go into heaven.

In 1907, MacDougall published his findings in the American Medicine and Journal of the American Society for Psychical Research journals. He got an article in The New York Times as well (opens in new tab).
Soul Unexplained issues

Even at the time, MacDougall’s study’s results were inconsistent and its tiny sample size seriously called into question the idea that he examined the soul. To MacDougall’s credit, he acknowledged that additional measurements were required to confirm the soul’s mass. That hasn’t happened due to a combination of ethical concerns and the trials’ peculiar nature. As per Mary Roach’s book “Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife,” a rancher in Oregon did make an attempt to repeat the soul-weighing experiment with a dozen sheep in the early 2000s (W. W. Norton & Co., 2005). The majority gained between 1 and 7 ounces (between 30 – 200 grammes), but the weight gains were sheep quickly reverted to their initial weights.

Dr. Gerry Nahum, a chemical engineer and medical professional who was attending the Duke University School of Medicine at the time, was also mentioned by Roach as having developed the theory that the soul, or at the very least, consciousness, must be connected to information, which is equivalent to a certain amount of energy. This energy might, in theory, be measured with precise enough electromagnetic instruments because the equation E = mc ^2 states that energy equals mass times the speed of light squared (thanks, Einstein). Nahum had not received funding as of 2007(opens in new tab) for experiments that would have shown whether he was correct. He is currently work for Bayer Pharmaceuticals.

The truth is that neither the existence of the soul nor its weight have been remotely determined by science. The area of religion will probably be left to resolve this problem.

Source of the Thames DRIES UP for the first time: Head of the river is now more than five MILES downstream - as the Met Office warns of 'very little meaningful rain' on the horizon

The source of the River Thames was originally just outside Cirencester
Rivers Trust says it has moved five miles downstream to Somerford Keynes
Experts have warned the change could have devastating impacts on aquatic life
And the Met Office says there is 'very little meaningful rain' on the horizon

With parts of the UK experiencing the driest conditions since the drought of 1976, experts have warned that the source of the River Thames has dried up for the first time on record.

The source of the river was originally just outside Cirencester, according to The Rivers Trust.

However, following a continuous period of dry weather, it is now more than five miles downstream, near Somerford Keynes.

Worryingly, the Met Office has warned of 'very little meaningful rain' on the horizon - with conditions now so extreme that a hosepipe ban affecting one million people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will come into force at 5pm today.

UK hosepipe bans come into force today

A hosepipe ban affecting one million people across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight comes into force at 5pm today.

Southern Water begins the 'temporary usage ban' today - a week before South East Water restrictions for Kent and Sussex start, covering 2.2million people. The 85,000 people on the Isle of Man have had a ban since last Friday.

Now, Welsh Water has also announced restrictions for 200,000 customers in Pembrokeshire and a small part of Carmarthenshire from August 19 - with the firm blaming the driest conditions since the drought of 1976.

Speaking to The Guardian, Dr Rob Collins, director of policy and science at The Rivers Trust, explained: 'Following the prolonged dry weather, the source of the Thames in Gloucestershire has dried up, with a weak flow now only just about discernible more than 5 miles downstream (at Somerford Keynes).

'Under our changing climate we can anticipate the frequency and severity of such periods of drought and water scarcity to intensify, with increasing competition for a dwindling resource and devastating impacts on aquatic life.'

The Met Office has warned there is 'very little meaningful rain' on the horizon for parched areas of England as temperatures are set to climb into the 30s next week.

While it could mean another heatwave - when there are above-average temperatures for three days or more - it is likely conditions will be well below the 40C (104F) seen in some places last month.

Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington said: 'We could see parts of the UK entering heatwave conditions if the above-average temperatures last for three days or more.

'Many areas of the UK, especially the south will witness temperatures several degrees higher than average, but these values are likely to be well below the record-breaking temperatures we saw in mid-July.

'As the high pressure builds there is very little meaningful rain in the forecast, especially in those areas in the south of England, which experienced very dry conditions last month.

'Elsewhere in the UK, such as in northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, rain-bearing weather fronts will make limited headway against the high pressure, bringing some rain to north-western parts of the UK.'

Some 17 million more people in other parts of England could soon be hit by further bans after Thames Water and South West Water both warned they might soon have to bring in restrictions - which would affect 15 million customers in London and the Thames Valley, and around two million in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset.

This would mean a total of 20.5 million people could be affected by water-use restrictions in England. As it stands, the number of people under a ban from today will stand at 1.1 million, which will rise to 3.3 million next Friday.

Welsh Water's temporary ban, announced yesterday, will mean customers in affected areas will not be allowed to water their plants, wash their cars or clean windows using a hose. Rule-breakers could face a fine of up to £1,000.

The Met Office says it's still too early to know how long the hot spell will last.

However, it reassures 'there are indications of a return to more changeable conditions from about mid-August.'
Q&A: Where are hosepipe bans and what could happen if I break one?

Where have hosepipe bans been introduced?

Manx Water: Isle of Man, from last Friday
Southern Water: Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, from today
South East Water: Kent and Sussex, from next Friday
Welsh Water: Pembrokeshire and small part of Carmarthenshire, from August 19

What are the rules?

Once the ban is in force you will not be allowed to use a hosepipe or sprinkler to water your garden, clean your car or boat, fill up a swimming or paddling pool or an ornamental pond. Pressure washing a patio is also banned. But the use of watering cans is allowed.

Who is exempt?

Those with disabilities – who have a blue badge – are exempt for watering their garden. So are those watering an area for a national or international sports event.

People watering newly laid turf and newly bought plants may apply for exemptions.

Commercial car washes and professional window cleaners are not affected by the ban.

What happens if I break the ban?

You could be prosecuted and subject to a fine of up to £1,000 in the courts if found guilty.

Tonga underwater volcanic eruption blasted 58,000 Olympic swimming pools-worth of water into the stratosphere and could weaken the ozone layer, NASA warns

Tonga volcanic eruption in January blasted 146 million tonnes of water vapour
NASA scientists think the volume could cause a temporary warming event
The water could also boost chemical reactions that deplete the ozone layer

Tonga's volcanic eruption in January blasted enough water to fill more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools - and could weaken the ozone layer.

Scientists who examined the amount of water vapour ejected by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano described it as 'unprecedented'.

The powerful steam was formed when seawater in the South Pacific came into contact with the lava and was 'superheated'.

The eruption created sound waves heard as far as Alaska 6,200 miles away, in a sonic boom that circled the globe twice.

In a new study, experts from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory predict the volume of water could be enough to temporarily affect the global average temperature.

It could also temporarily boost chemical reactions in the atmosphere that worsen the depletion of the ozone layer.

'We've never seen anything like it,' said atmospheric scientist Dr Luis Millán.

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, an underwater volcano in the South Pacific, spewed ash and other debris as high as 25 miles into the atmosphere when it erupted in January

In the study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, Dr Millán and his colleagues estimate that the Tonga eruption sent around 146 million tonnes of water vapour into the stratosphere.

The stratosphere is the layer of the atmosphere between about 8 and 33 miles (12 and 53 kilometres) above the Earth's surface.

Water from the January 15 eruption equates to approximately 10 per cent of the water content already present in the stratosphere.

Comparable amounts of water have only been blasted to such high altitudes by volcanoes twice before in the 18 years that NASA has been taking measurements.

These were the 2008 Kasatochi event in Alaska and the 2015 Calbuco eruption in Chile.

The water from these events dissipated quickly, but NASA researchers claim the liquid from the Tonga volcano could remain in the stratosphere for up to ten years.

صورة

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption caused many effects, like atmospheric waves, extreme winds and unusual electric currents, that were felt around the world and into space

To determine the volume of water vapour, scientists analysed data from Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) instrument on NASA's Aura satellite.

This measures atmospheric gases, including water vapour and ozone, by observing natural microwave signals emitted from Earth's atmosphere.

The researchers noticed readings increased dramatically after the Tonga volcano erupted.

Dr Millán, who manages the instrument from Pasadena, California, USA, said: 'We had to carefully inspect all the measurements in the plume to make sure they were trustworthy.

'MLS was the only instrument with dense enough coverage to capture the water vapor plume as it happened, and the only one that wasn't affected by the ash that the volcano released.'

Ash from the Tonga eruption was seen from SPACE

Ash sent spewing into the air from the massive underwater volcanic eruption in Tonga was photographed by International Space Station astronauts.

NASA shared the remarkable pictures taken out of the ISS Cupola windows, showing a blanket of ash from plumes spewing thousands of feet into the atmosphere.

The event was so striking that satellites captured the moment of the eruption, with astronauts on the ISS taking images of plumes and blankets of ash over the region.

When the water molecules break down in the stratosphere, they release reactive hydrogen oxide molecules.

These react with and destroy ozone by themselves, but also convert chlorine-containing gases into other destructive molecules.

Water vapour also traps heat, so the eruption could result in a temporary warming effect on the surface of Earth, for what the researchers think may be the first time.

While it is counted as a 'greenhouse gas', like carbon dioxide and methane, any warming would not be enough to exacerbate climate change effects.

This is because the warmth would dissipate as the extra water was naturally cycled out of the stratosphere.

Conversely, previous massive volcanic eruptions, like Krakatoa, blasted ash, dust and gases into the atmosphere that reflect sunlight back into space, and produced a cooling effect.

In the paper, Dr Millán wrote: 'It is critical to continue monitoring volcanic gases from this eruption and future ones to better quantify their varying roles in climate.'

The researchers believe that the Tonga volcano was only able to produce the vast amounts of water vapour it did because of its precise depth underwater.

Its caldera - the large crater formed while magma begins erupting - is thought to be located about 490 feet (150 metres) down.

If it were any shallower, there wouldn't have been enough seawater superheated by the magma to account for the volume of stratospheric water vapour.

However, any deeper and the pressure from the ocean could have muted the violent eruption.

Radar surveys before and after the eruption show that only small parts remain of two uninhabited Tongan islands above the volcano – Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai
WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE JANUARY TONGA ERUPTION?

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, an underwater volcano in the South Pacific, spewed debris as high as 25 miles into the atmosphere when it erupted on January 15.

It triggered a 7.4 magnitude earthquake, sending tsunami waves crashing into the island, leaving it covered in ash and cut off from outside help.

It also released somewhere between 5 to 30 megatons (5 million to 30 million tonnes) of TNT equivalent, according to NASA Earth Observatory.

Digital elevation maps from the NASA Earth Observatory also show the dramatic changes at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, the uppermost part of a large underwater volcano.

Prior to the explosion earlier this month, the twin uninhabited islands Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai were merged by a volcanic cone to form one landmass.

Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha'apai are themselves remnants of the northern and western rim of the volcano's caldera – the hollow that forms shortly after the emptying of a magma chamber.

NASA said the eruption 'obliterated' the volcanic island about 41 miles (65km) north of the Tongan capital Nuku'alofa, on the island of Tongatapu (Tonga's main island).

It blanketed the island kingdom of about 100,000 in a layer of toxic ash, poisoning drinking water, destroying crops and completely wiping out at least two villages.

It also claimed at least three lives in Tonga and resulted in the drowning deaths of two beachgoers in Peru after freak waves hit the South American country.

Peruvian authorities have declared an environmental disaster after the waves hit an oil tanker offloading near Lima, creating a huge slick along the coast.

The Humanoid Robot Will Be Revealed On September 30

August 5, 2022Innovation

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, tested the Optimus humanoid robot prototype and the location of Tesla’s new factory during yesterday’s annual shareholder meeting.

Let’s look at the somewhat uninteresting news from the annual shareholder meeting before getting too excited.

At Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting, shareholders voted the majority of board recommendations, including authorising a stock split and re-electing directors, while rejecting proposals that focused on environment & governance.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, stated that the business would keep constructing factories in order to reach a production pace of 2 million vehicles yearly by the end of 2022.

Musk hinted at a new Tesla location “later this year” during the meeting, saying, “We got a lot of Canada.” I have half Canadian. Perhaps I should?”

Tesla has factories in California and Shanghai, and it is building 2 more in Austin, Texas, & Berlin, Germany. Musk predicted that he would eventually have 10-12 gigafactories.
Optimus might be revealed in September

Musk revealed an image of the Optimus prototype while teasing AI Day #2, which was supposed to be held on August 19th but was postponed by Musk to September 3rd.

The image appears to show the actual Tesla Optimus prototype’s robotic hands making a heart sign.

He previously explained why AI Day #2 was being postponed: the company may be working on the Optimus prototype until then.

Musk announced in January that the development of Optimus in 2022 will take precedence over other products. Optimus, or Optimus Subprime, a bipedal, humanoid robot that Musk teased during Tesla’s AI Day in August 2021, is Musk’s vision of a bot that can do all the boring, repetitive tasks that humans prefer not to do.

He hopes to begin production of the first version of Optimus in 2023. “It will upend our understanding of what the economy is,” Musk said in a video of the event. “It will be capable of do anything that humans do not want to do. It will get the job done. It is going to bring age of abundance. It may be difficult to imagine, but as you watch Optimus develop, and we will ensure that it is safe (no Terminator stuff), it will transform the world to an even greater extent than the car.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0z4FweCy4M

We are excited to learn that Optimus will be revealed in two months, and we will see if the dark path from the Terminator franchise becomes a reality or if we are going to have robots that acts like house elves.

Tesla, which was founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has been approached for a comment by MailOnline but is yet to respond to the video.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed that it 'currently has an open and active investigation of Tesla's Autopilot active driver assistance system'.

A spokesperson said this included the full self driving software and that the agency 'considers all relevant data and information that may assist its investigation'.

The Dawn Project released the video as part of its launch of a nationwide public safety ad campaign highlighting the dangers of Tesla's full self-driving software.

'The deeply disturbing results of our safety test of Tesla full self-driving should be a rallying cry to action,' said Dan O'Dowd, founder of The Dawn Project.

'Elon Musk says Tesla's Full Self-Driving software is "amazing". It's not. It's a lethal threat to all Americans.'

He added: 'Over 100,000 Tesla drivers are already using the car's full self-driving mode on public roads, putting children at great risk in communities across the country.'

The safety test was carried out at the Willow Springs International Raceway and test track in Rosamond, California on June 21.

It was recorded and the footage shows a Tesla in full self-driving mode repeatedly running over the child-sized mannequin.

An NHTSA spokesperson said: 'NHTSA currently has an open and active investigation of Tesla's autopilot active driver assistance system, including the "full self-driving" software.

'As that engineering analysis is ongoing, NHTSA considers all relevant data and information that may assist the agency in its investigation.'

In February this year, Tesla recalled nearly 54,000 cars and SUVs because their full self-driving software was found to let them roll through stop signs without coming to a complete halt.

The over-the-internet software update, which was being tested by a number of drivers, allowed the vehicles to go through junctions with a stop sign at up to 5.6 miles per hour.

Documents shared by US safety regulators said Tesla had agreed to the recall after two meetings with officials from NHTSA.

Tesla said at the time that it was not aware of any crashes or injuries caused by the feature, and that there had been no warranty claims as a result of issues with the rolling start update.

The recall covered Model S sedans and X SUVs from 2016 to 2022, as well as 2017 to 2022 Model 3 sedans and 2020 to 2022 Model Y SUVs.

Beta testing of the full self-driving software was carried out by selected Tesla drivers.

However, the cars cannot drive themselves and drivers must be ready to take action at all times, the company says.

Safety advocates complain that Tesla should not be allowed to test the vehicles on public roads with untrained drivers, and that the Tesla software can malfunction, exposing other motorists and pedestrians to danger.

Most car companies with similar software test with trained human safety drivers.

In November last year, the NHTSA said it was looking into a complaint from a Tesla driver that the full self-driving software caused a crash.

The driver said their Model Y went into the wrong lane and was hit by another vehicle. The SUV gave the driver an alert halfway through the turn and the driver tried to turn the wheel to avoid other traffic, according to the complaint.

But the car took control and 'forced itself into the incorrect lane,' the driver reported.

No one was hurt in the crash on November 3 in Brea, California, according to the complaint.

In December, Tesla agreed to update its less sophisticated autopilot driver-assist system after the NHTSA opened an investigation.

The company agreed to stop allowing video games to be played on centre touch screens while its vehicles are moving.

The agency is also investigating why Teslas on autopilot have repeatedly crashed into emergency vehicles parked on roads.

Sweat Tracking Smart Necklace Monitors Wearer’s Health

There are 400 million diabetics worldwide, and a new smart necklace that can detect many chemicals and concentrations in sweat could significantly improve their quality of life by removing the requirement for finger-prick blood testing.

The instrument has a clasp and pendant with a bio-chemical sensor on the back that, when worn around the neck, records levels of serotonin and glucose.

Ohio State University engineers demonstrated the smart necklace’s ability to monitor the concentrations of sodium, potassium and hydrogen ions from a subject’s sweat with close to 98.9 % during a human testing.

The company also sees their bio-sensors being implanted under the skin or incorporated to jewellery like rings and earrings to alert wearers to changes in their health.

Sweat contains thousands of biomarkers that provide information about our health status, according to study co-author Jinghua Li.

In a statement, she stated that “the next generation of biosensors would be so incredibly bio-intuitive and non-invasive that we will be able to detect important information stored in an individual’s body fluids.”

Li added that since the sensor is so small, only a trace amount of sweat is required to obtain a reading.

The smart necklace was worn by a volunteer as they cycled for 30 minutes in the first human testing of the device, which were carried out by Li and her team.

The individual then took a 15-minute pause, drank a beverage with added sugar, and started riding again.

The findings demonstrate that within 30 to 40 minutes after sugar intake, the glucose concentration in sweat peaks in all cases.

The scientists wrote in the study, which was published in Science Advances, “The results reveal a far less spike in glucose concentration thereafter, which implies that ingesting sugar can cause a rise in the quantity of glucose in sweat.”

Even though it will be some time before a device resembling the prototype used in this study is made accessible to the general public, Li says that the team is already considering how to help the people who will need this possibly life-saving technology the most.

The sensors are created out of materials that are incredibly thin rather than the thick and rigid computer chips present in our phones and laptops.

The product is extremely flexible thanks to this design, which also safeguards the device’s functionality and guarantees that it can safely contact a person’s skin.

Li said she envisions it as a lightweight device with straightforward circuit designs that could be easily incorporated into our daily lives, even if the paper mentions that even more miniaturisation would make it more viable for this and related devices to become implantable.

Although this biosensor is intended to track health, other wearable unveiled last year may determine whether the wearer is burnt out.

The technique, created by engineers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and start-up Xsensio, measures cortisol levels in sweat.

According to the researchers, the gadget offers both great sensitivity and extremely low detection limits and is applied directly to the wearer’s skin.
