Massive 60-ton log over 40,000 years old found buried beneath swamp in New Zealand could help explain one of Earth’s greatest mysteries



A 45,000-year-old log discovered during excavation of a new power plant could explain a mysterious global event that may have dramatically altered Earth’s climate.

Scientists in New Zealand believe the 60-ton log could hold the answer to the ancient Laschamp Event – where the earth’s north and south poles switched with each other 40,000 years ago.

The 60-ton Kauri log was found nine meters below the surface in Ngāwhā on New Zealand’s north island in February, and was handed over to local Maoris on Wednesday following a major excavation operation.

Top Energy, the company that builds the power plant, started digging in 2017 and dug 900,000 cubic meters of soil before accidentally finding a 16-meter log.

Scientist Alan Hogg, from the University of Waikato, identified the tree as 40,500 years ago, the NZ Herald reported.

The age of the mammoth log has intrigued scientists studying the Laschamp Event – a ‘magnetic inversion’ where the Earth’s north and south magnetic poles swap places.

It is not known exactly when the reversal occurred but it is thought to have been around 41,000 years ago.

The scientists hope that studying the levels of radiocarbon in tree rings will allow them to determine when and for how long the reversal occurs.

Kiwi scientists believe that a magnetic field reversal – and a decrease in the strength of the Earth’s magnetic field, which allows more solar radiation to reach the Earth’s surface – could have a major effect on climate.

“This tree is critical, we’ve never found one of this age before” said Mr Hogg, adding that finding the tree was a stroke of luck and this will play a huge role in future research.

Given its size, the tree was probably 1500-2000 years old when it died, Mr. Hogg said.

The 16-meter-long log was transported to the nearby Ngāwhā Marae (sacred site), where a ceremony to welcome the old tree to the care of the hapū (a division of Maoris) was held.

Ngāwhā Trusists committee chairman Richard Woodman said it was a ‘great acknowledgment’ from Shaw that the tree had been returned to its rightful owner and not as a gift.

Transporting trees is a huge undertaking, with sections about 1.5m long that need to be cut off at both ends to be able to move. The stump alone weighs 28 tons.The three sections were lifted by two 130-ton cranes, then carried by five-foot kimolet trucks down the highway, with the entire operation lasting four hours.

While smart glasses were once constrained to the world of science fiction, brands ranging from Snapchat to Facebook have released their own devices in recent years.

Now, a new pair of smart glasses has been launched for people who are deaf or suffer from hearing loss.



The glasses, called XRAI Glass, use augmented reality to transform audio into captions that are instantly projected in front of the wearer's eyes.

'We are so proud of the ability of this innovative technology to enrich the lives of people who are deaf and have hearing loss, so that they can maximise potential,' said Dan Scarfe, XRAI Glass CEO.

'Whether that means being able to have a conversation while continuing to make dinner or keeping a conversation going while walking with a friend.'

The hardware was developed by AR glasses company Nreal through their Nreal Air glasses, while XRAI Glass provided the software.

This software converts audio into a subtitled version of conversation, which then appears on the screen of the glasses.

Thanks to voice recognition capabilities, the glasses can even identify who's speaking, and will soon be able to translate languages, voice tones, accents and pitch, according to XRAI Glass.

Josh Feldman, 23, was born with profound hearing loss and has had hearing aids in both ears since he was 18 months old.

He tested the glasses without having any idea what they were about to do, and described them as 'quite extraordinary.'

'The impact of being able to not rely on looking at someone's lips and being able to talk to them is clearly something which could be life changing,' Josh said.

Meanwhile, Hannah Brady, who has 60 per cent hearing loss in both ears, described the glasses as 'brilliant'.

Aside from allowing deaf people to 'see' conversations with other people, the glasses can also open the door to other technologies, such as smart assistants.

WHICH COMPANIES ARE WORKING ON AUGMENTED REALITY GLASSES?
Last year, Snap unveiled its next generation of Spectacles, which are its first to feature augmented reality (AR)

Augmented reality (AR) glasses have seen a resurgence in desirability, with a host of firms working to develop their own technology.

Bose recently joined a quickly growing list of tech companies that are building augmented reality eyeglasses.

The first company to enter the race was Google, which released the Google Glass in 2011.

Since then, several companies have come out with their own products.
